Taylor County Marriage Preparation
“Before You Tie the Knot”
A wedding is a day, but the marriage is forever. The "Before You Tie the Knot" marriage preparation course is offered at the Taylor County Cooperative Extension Office. Each class consists of a four hour workshop.
Before You Tie the Knot is an educational program offering constructive guidance to couples as they begin life as a married couple. The program is designed to help you understand that it takes both partners working together to make a marriage successful. How well you handle your own emotions and relate to your partner’s emotions and needs will determine how well you will adjust to being married.
The challenge of creating a good marriage is a great one. This class will guide you through the process. It will help you to make choices and decisions about how you can make your marriage a happy, lasting one.
Before You Tie the Knot covers the following:
- Communication
- Conflict management and resolution
- Financial responsibility and spending plans
- Children and parenting responsibilities
The extension classes fulfill the requirements of Florida Statute 741.0305 and 741.04, Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act, that became effective January 1, 1999. A $32.50 discount on the marriage license is given to couples who have completed approved premarital classes and the waiting period required upon applying for a license is waived. The Extension classes have been approved by the Circuit Court of Taylor County for licenses issued in this county.
To receive a pre-registration form, call the Taylor County Extension Office at (850) 838-3509 or email Deborah Humphries. Please note that if a religious ceremony is planned, it is important that the couple contact their minister, priest, or rabbi. Although the University of Florida Extension course fulfills the state requirement, additional classes may be required by your religion.
